A Suffragette in America by E Sylvia Pankhurst. Edited with an Introduction by Katherine Connolly.
Sylvia Pankhurst (1882 – 1960) was a socialist-feminist, a suffragette who organised among working-class women in East London, a writer and a painter, a revolutionary opponent of the First World War, later an anti-fascist and campaigner for Ethiopia’s independence.
A Suffragette in America is Pankhurst’s account – previously unpublished – of two tours of the United States in 1911 and 1912. She vividly recalls a courageous strike of laundry workers in New York, the appalling conditions in the prison cells of Chicago, and the horrific racism she witnessed in Tennessee.
Katherine Connolly is making her own tour of the USA to launch the book.
