Chicago Session 4: The Dialectic of Negativity

Summer reading group on Philosophy and Revolution from Hegel and Marx to today.

Suggested readings: Philosophy and Revolution (pp. 10-15); Hegel’s Phenomenology, “Absolute Knowing” (pp. 454-67).

Is a successful transformation of society possible without revolutionary theory? Which theories or philosophies can provide direction for overcoming capitalism? We will explore these questions by focusing on the Hegelian roots of Marx’s thought and its implications for today’s freedom struggles. We will read excerpts from Raya Dunayevskaya’s book Philosophy and Revolution, supplemented by selected readings by Hegel, Marx, and contemporary radical thinkers.

All readings are available for free by contacting us at arise@internationalmarxisthumanist.org

Meetings held every other Wednesday, at 6:30 pm

Harold Washington Library, 400 S. State St., Chicago, 6th Fl. South
